Raging Grannies, an
innovative popular education group, is born
In the winter of 1987, in the city of Victoria,
British Columbia, Canada, a group of eight women concerned with the danger of
nuclear-powered and nuclear-armed vessels coming into Canadian waters, decided
to get their message across by singing protest songs. At that time, those
creative and courageous eight women didn't know that those modest steps
were the beginnings of an ever growing popular education group that would expand
quickly throughout and abroad. Through satirical protest songs, theatrical
pieces, media stunts and a variety of awareness-raising strategies, the Raging
Grannies were very effective in expressing their commitments for the
environment, for peace and for social justice. Their initiatives are based on
research, humor and originality. The research allows them to get the facts
straight, and the humour and the originality help them to educate us about
political issues using art and entertainment as the main format.
