| New Feminist Research volume 23 number 3 The articles in this issue feature new developments in feminist research.
Barbara Freeman's piece, "The Media and the Royal Commission on the Status
of Women in Canada, 1966-1972," examines how the media has historically
contributed to the public's understanding of the Commission's work. She
focuses on the gender of the journalists and how this has affected the
various perspectives the media has presented with regard to the status
of women in Canada. Annmarie Adams' article, "Building Barriers: Images
of Women in Canada's Architectural Press, 1924-73" analyzes representations
of women in the Journal of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada
and how these representations relate to Canadian women's struggles for
acceptance as professional architects. In "The Gender of Sound: Description,
Definition and Mistrust of the Female Voice in Western Culture," Ann Carson
discusses how women's voices have been interpreted in ancient and modern
times. She argues that women have been discriminated against in numerous
ways because of the sound of their voices. Mary Ann Duffy in "Linden Lore:
Images of a New Educational Model for Young Women" reflects on her teaching
practices at The Linden School, a feminist school for girls, which strives
to help young women develop and sustain self confidence with regard to
their academic abilities. A bibiliography compiled by Nathalie Stephens
highlights women's literature from Guadeloupe. This issue also contains
three reports on a conference held in Bombay in December 1993, which brought
together feminist activists from Canada and India who work in the field
of violence against women. Book reviews, announcements of events, conferences
and feminist resources are included in this issue as well.
