Reporting an Emergency

Fire Safety

If you discover a fire:

  1. Vacate fire area and close door.
  2. Activate nearest wall mounted fire alarm.
  3. Evacuate the building. DO NOT USE ELEVATORS
  4. Do not carry food or drink into the stair wells.
  5. Report to Fire Department (9)-911 and the University Emergency Control Centre (9)-416-978-2222.

When you hear the fire alarm:

  1. Evacuate the building quickly.
  2. Do not use elevators.
  3. Proceed to the nearest fire exit and leave the building completely. DO NOT GATHER IN THE BUILDING LOBBIES OR WALKWAYS.
  4. Do not re-enter the building until the all clear is sounded.

If a power failure occurs and you are in an elevator:

  1. Remain calm.
  2. If there is an elevator telephone, pick up the handset and you will be linked directly to the U of T Police. Provide information as required.
  3. If there is not a telephone is the elevator, press the red emergency button and wait for assistance.
  4. Do not force open the elevator car doors. Do not exit from the car if it is not at the floor level, emergency personnel will be dispatched to remedy the problem so that you can exit safely.

General tips:

  1. Do not attempt to extinguish a fire by yourself - have someone else stand by with another extinguisher. Do not use the fire hoses.
  2. Familiarize yourself with locations of the fire alarms and exit stairwells which can be used.
  3. All smoke or fumes of undetermined origin must be reported to University Emergency Control Centre (9) 416-978-2222 or OISE/UT Security (9) 416-926-4700
  4. Do not leave furniture blocking stair well doors. Report any blocked fire doors to OISE/UT Security (9) 416-926-4700
  5.  Report all Fires no matter how small to the U of T Police.

Emergency calls to the U of T Police from pay phones in the building are free.


Bomb Threats

No bomb threat should be ignored. Do not panic, stay calm.

Any person receiving a bomb threat over the phone should ask the caller:

  • When is the bomb going to explode?
  • Where is the bomb located?
  • What kind of bomb is it?
  • What does it look like?
  • Why did you place the bomb?

Keep talking to the caller as long as you can and record the following:

  • Time of call
  • Age and gender of caller.
  • Speech pattern, accents, possible nationality
  • Emotional state of the caller
  • Background noise.

Immediately notify the University Police (9) 416-978-2222.

University Police will immediately conduct a bomb search with the assistance of employee volunteers who will be familiar with the area. If a suspicious object or potential bomb is located, the area will immediately be evacuated.
