Hazardous Waste Disposal Instructions: for OISE/UT Buildings

for complete instructions please refer to The University of Toronto Laboratory Hazardous Materials Information site: http://www.utoronto.ca:80/safety/info.htm

This document is a quick reference for workers who discover unauthorized syringes, needles blades and similar metallic sharp or pointed items (SHARP). These items will usually been discovered in public areas such as playground, parking lot, washrooms or other areas that can be accessed by the public.

1. Obtain a SHARP kit

  • when such an item is discovered ensure the area is secure so that students or staff do not inadvertently injure themselves on the "sharp"
  • obtain the pick up kit located in one of the following areas.

  • 252 Bloor in the Operations & Services Office C-157
  • 371 Bloor in the UTS main office 116
  • 45 Walmer/56 Spadina room 229

    The kit consists of:

  • a 1.4 litre yellow container
  • plastic gloves
  • metal tongs
  • a large white 20 litre pail
  • additional kits can be obtained from Operations & Services

2. Package the SHARP for disposal

  • wearing the plastic gloves pick up the "sharp" with the metal tongs and place it in the yellow plastic container.
  • store the metal tongs in the larger white pail until needed.
  • place the yellow plastic container in the larger white pail
  • ensure the lid is on the pail and the pail is stored in a safe and secure location.
  • dispose of the plastic gloves in the larger white pail.

3. Notify Caretaking

  • when the yellow container is full, but not filled beyond capacity, notify Caretaking to pick up the white pail. This pail will be disposed of by the University.

The University of Toronto Police and OISE/UT Operations & Services are to be notified each time a "sharp" is discovered in one of the OISE/UT building locations.
